Ann and her mother had lived in a small house as long as Ann could remember. Christmas was so close. Ann wished she could get a beautiful dress. But she knew how hard her mom worked. Maybe she could make a wish—Santa Claus would come...

Her classmates were talking about Christmas gifts.

"My aunt is going to give me a pretty branded doll again," said Ria.

"I have told my parents about that expensive watch. They will buy it for me," Tessi said.

Ann felt left out in those conversations. She had neither rich parents nor rich relatives to give her expensive gifts.

It was not just the gift that worried Ann. Her mother was working overtime and looked weak these days.

The days passed and soon it was Christmas Eve. Ann went to bed with a heavy heart. Ring... Ring... Ann jumped, hearing the alarm. Without much hope, she wondered if there were any gifts for her. She found a beautiful packet! There was a beautiful white dress and a short note inside. Ann read the note:

Dear Ann,

This dress is a gift for you for being a good girl. Hope you continue to do good things and help your mother.

Your loving friend,
Santa Claus

Ann looked into the note carefully. Then she realized that the handwriting was the same as her mother's. Her mother had worked overtime to save money to buy this expensive gift for her!

Gift giving is common. Over time, different cultures have developed their own gift-giving customs and traditions.

Gift giving in China

In China, gifts are given on special days, such as birthdays, or for special events like eating a dinner at a friend's home.

While it's true that a gift is just a gift, what is more important is the meaning behind the gift. In China, some gifts need to be avoided including clocks, shoes, umbrellas, knives, green hats, anything in groups of four and anything in black or white.

Gift giving in America

Whether a gift is given or not, greeting cards are often used for birthdays, Christmas, Father's/Mother's Day, weddings(婚礼), and Easter. In America, common gifts are candies or toys for children, and chocolate, fine food, books, clothes and tools for adults.

After receiving a gift, people show thanks to the person by saying "Thank you so much" or "This is too nice". Hugs or kisses may be exchanged. Thank-you cards are usually be sent out in return in the same week when the gifts are received.

Donna Brown, a 14-year-old girl, was very sick. She had a bad heart. "Donna must have a new heart," her doctor said, "or she will die soon." Felipe Green, Donna's good friend, heard the news, he was very worried about Donna. He didn't want her to die. He decided to give his heart to her because he knew he was going to die.

Then he talked to his mother about his idea. But his mother didn't pay much attention to him. "Felipe is just playing a joke," his mother thought. In fact, Felipe often had terrible headaches and never told his mother about them.

One morning, he woke up with great pain and he couldn't breathe. The Greens hurried to send him to the hospital. The doctors had bad news for the Greens, "Felipe's brain is dead." The Greens were very sad. But Felipe's mother remembered his words. She told the doctors to give Felipe's heart to Donna. The doctors did several tests. They said they could give Felipe's heart to Donna.

Everything was successful. Felipe's heart was beating in Donna's chest(胸膛), but Donna didn't know it. The doctors and her parents didn't tell her until she was stronger. Donna was very thankful to the Greens. Every time the Greens saw Donna, they thought of Felipe. Donna has Felipe's heart in her. That gives them great peace.
