Unit 2 Let's celebrate!

Mei: Hi, Lucy. What are you up to next Friday?

Lucy: Hmm, I don't think I have anything planned. Why?

Mei: It's the Double Ninth Festival. Would you like to spend the day with me and my family?

Lucy: It's really kind of you to ask, Mei! Yes, I would be delighted. Thanks for asking!

Mei: Not at all. You don't have any family in China and you shouldn't be alone on a festival.

Lucy: That's very thoughtful of you! However, I haven't heard of the Double Ninth Festival. Could you tell me about it?

Mei: Yes, it's not well known outside China, is it? It takes place on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month and its purpose is to show respect to older people. We go hiking up a mountain…

Lucy: Wait, what? You go hiking for a festival?

Mei: (laughs)Yes! There's a story behind that. There was once a man called Heng Jing. He wanted to protect people from an evil creature that caused people to get sick. When the evil creature came, Heng Jing told everyone to hide on a mountain. Then he killed the creature.

Lucy: I see. So you remember the person by going hiking! I'll bring my hiking boots then. What else should I bring? Something for your family, perhaps?

Mei: If you would like to bring a gift, then chrysanthemum would be a good idea. People have chrysanthemum in their homes during the festival. People believe that they clean the air and keep diseases away.

Lucy: Excellent! I'll bring some of those flowers then. Where should I meet you?

Mei: Meet me outside the train station at 9:00 am. And I'll take you to my apartment for some Chongyang cakes first. Then we'll go hiking. You can bring a friend if you like.

Lucy: I can't wait! See you next Friday!
