Unit 4 Amazing art
Jack: What did you think of the exhibition?
Maddy: It was quite interesting to me.
Dave: Really, which painting did you like best?
Maddy: Oh, I really liked that painting by Henri Matisse. What was it called? It was the
one with flowers and boats.
Jack: Oh, you mean the Open Window. Why on earth did you like that painting?
Maddy: Colour, colour and more colour!
Dave: I don't remember that one.
Maddy: Here it is in the programme. Have a look!
Jack: It's colourful, but it's too simple for me. I'm not keen on the broad brush strokes.
Maddy: But look at the way the flowers were being framed by the window, and the
boats were being framed by the flowers. It really draws the eye through the
window, so you can imagine standing there. It makes me want to throw open
the windows and say “hello” to the world!
Jack: But honestly, I think a child could paint better than that.
Dave: No, no. I agree with Maddy. The painting is full of life and colour. Look at the
way things are arranged. While the painting may look simple, Matisse really
gave it a lot of thought.
Jack: I simply don't see that. Everything looks so poorly drawn.
Dave: But it's not supposed to be a realist painting—it's supposed to give you the
feeling of the scene. And you know what's really amazing about the picture?
Maddy: No, what?
Dave: It has just about every colour you can think of, but one colour is missing.
Maddy: Yeah, I see it! Matisse didn't use black!
Dave: That's right! While there is a little black right above the window, all of the
shadows were done with blue and green.
Maddy: That's why the painting looks so bright, like a taste of sunshine!
Dave: Exactly!
