Unit 5 What an adventure!
Interviewer: Well, John, you've been on many adventures in your life. Which impressed
you most?
John: Probably my first, when I was five years old.
Interviewer: Oh? That's quite young.
John: Yes, we lived in the southern US at that time, but my father got a new job in
Anchorage, Alaska, so he decided to drive 8,000 kilometres and camp along
the way.
Interviewer: Well, I've driven on the Alaskan-Canadian Highway, but the road is quite
nice. This doesn't sound like much of an adventure.
John: No, it's not much of an adventure now. But the road was all dirt and rock
back then, and not very smooth. It was also true wilderness! You could
drive for hundreds of kilometres without seeing any cars, people or gas
stations, so you had to make sure you had bought everything you needed.
Interviewer: For example?
John: Food, water and petrol along with tools and spare parts to repair the car
when it broke down—and it broke down often!
Interviewer: Did you encounter any dangerous wildlife?
John: Oh, yes! Once I was helping Mom cook breakfast, and my brother ran out
and said that there was a big brown “dog” in the tent. It turned out the big
brown “dog” was really a huge brown bear! Fortunately, they were able to
chase it away.
Interviewer: What else do you remember from the trip?
John: Taking a bath in a hot spring with animals… in an old abandoned mining
town… the Northern Lights… and mile after mile of the most wonderful
forests, mountains and rivers you could ever see…
Interviewer: Such memories last forever.
John: Indeed, they do. That trip is where my desire for adventure all started. It
drove me to always want to see and experience new things. I'll never forget it!
Interviewer: Thanks for sharing your story.
