Unit 2 Onwards and upwards
Conversation 1
Grace: Hi, Jake! Why are you so upset?
Jake: Well, you know I played quite badly in the basketball last week.
Grace: But I'm sure you did your best.
Jake: I thought so, but it simply wasn't good enough. Today the coach called and said
that he was cutting me from the team.
Grace: Oh, no!
Jake: Yes. He said that he couldn't keep me on the team when there were so many better
players who wanted to join in. I guess I'll never become a professional player!
Grace: That's really too bad. But you know, even really good players fail to become
professionals.
Jake: I know. But I feel so worthless!
Grace: Don't. You have a lot going for you. You're smart, you're funny, and you're a great
artist. You should be proud of yourself. You have a bright future.
Jake: Thanks.

Conversation 2
Bill: Are you OK Tracy? You seem really down.
Tracy: No. I'm fine.
Bill: I don't mean to be nosy, but are you sure?
Tracy: Well, my violin teacher asked me to join her on stage for a concert.
Bill: You must have been delighted!
Tracy: I was. But then ...
Bill: But then what happened?
Tracy: Well, there I was with my mother and father in the audience watching, and it
came time for me to play. But I just got started when one of my violin strings
broke!
Bill: Oh, no! Couldn't you replace it?
Tracy: There wasn't enough time. I had to stop, and no one got to hear me play!
Bill: I know this is hard for you, but you should cheer up. I'm sure you will get
another chance soon.
Tracy: I know you're right.
