Unit 3 Faster, higher, stronger
Kate: The first meeting of our sports club is next week, and we need to agree on which
sport we should suggest our club focus on this next year.
Bill: Well, my vote is basketball, of course. Everyone loves to play basketball.
Kate: Are you serious?
Bill: Why? What's wrong with basketball?
Kate: Well, I just think it's much more popular with the boys than it is with the girls.
Besides, all of the girls in our club are much shorter than the boys. Don't you
think that it is unfair to have them play against each other?
Bill: I guess you're right. What sport do you suggest then?
Kate: How about football? It's true that some of the boys are faster runners than the
girls, but most of the girls enjoy playing it, and they can still kick the ball.
Bill: I don't think it should be football. I mean, our sports club is supposed to be for
all the students, and some aren't in good enough shape to go running full speed
up and down a field for hours on end.
Kate: But that's why we have our sports club: to get into shape. I can see what you
mean, though. A few of the players in our club can't run that well, they will feel
left out if we play football. I would hate to see them standing on the side of the
field while everyone else is having fun.
Bill: That's why a sport like badminton might be a better choice. Everyone can play it,
so it won't be as hard for some students.
Kate: You're right. And many of the girls play even better than the boys, so they won't
be at a disadvantage.
Bill: Badminton it is, then!
