Unit 5 Revealing nature
Today, we are going to talk about an amazing habitat for some terrifying-sounding wild
animals that most people have never heard about, a habitat very close to you that you
know quite well ... your own body.
For example, have you heard of eyelash mites? These are tiny little creatures that live on
our eyelashes and eat dead skin cells and oil. Actually, they are so small that you cannot
see them with the naked eye. These creatures usually live for less than three weeks, but
the females can lay a lot of eggs. While they are most famous for living on our eyelashes,
they can live all over our faces. Not everyone has eyelash mites. They are less common
with children and young people, but most older people have them. Even though these
creatures look and sound awful, they are probably not all that harmful.
Speaking of which, while some bacteria are bad for us, other bacteria help keep us
healthy. For example, do you know about armpit bacteria? These are bacteria that live in
our armpits and that feed on our oil and sweat. While that sounds terrible, they actually
keep funguses from giving us skin infections. Without these little creatures, our skin
would be in really bad shape. By the way, it is these bacteria that cause our armpits to
smell. So, while it may not seem nice to have smelly armpits, we should be grateful that
these bacteria are around.
