Unit 1 Growing up
A: So, Jim, what are your plans after we graduate from senior high school? Are you
going to university?
B: Well, Bob, I have decided to take a gap year before I go to college.
A: Really? What are you going to do?
B: I'm not sure yet. Could you give me some advice?
A: Sure. How about travelling to a developing country and spending time there helping
people? Perhaps you could work for a charity to build schools and so on?
B: I did think of that, but I'm concerned that it might not be safe in those places. Also,
my parents are worried that I could get ill, and are afraid I couldn't find a doctor
easily or obtain medicine.
A: Don't be afraid! You are strong and healthy, and these days you are never too far from
a hospital. Anyway, if you don't want to go so far, how about working as a volunteer
to teach English in a local school for newly arrived migrants?
B: That's a good idea. I enjoy working with younger people. And my parents will be
happy to know I am not too far from home. But what if I discover that I am not a
good teacher? You know I am quite an impatient person.
A: Yes, but this will be a learning opportunity for you as well as for the children. It will
be a chance for you to mature and discover if teaching is a suitable career for you.
B: Thanks for the advice and encouragement, Bob. I'll certainly consider this suggestion.
A: Good luck with your gap year plans, Jim.
