Unit 1 Looking forwards
Interviewer: Hello Laura. First of all, is there anything you would like to ask me?
Laura: Yes, I do. Could you please tell me why the job advert says that applicants
need to be physically fit?
Interviewer: That's a good question! It's because you will need to carry heavy boxes of
food and stand for long periods. Being a kitchen assistant can be quite tiring.
Laura: I see, thank you. Also, would you please explain the duties?
Interviewer: Certainly. Your duties will involve cleaning the kitchen, moving supplies
around and washing up.
Laura: That's good to know.
Interviewer: May I ask whether you have any related experience?
Laura: I have worked in a restaurant before, but not for money. The duties were very
similar.
Interviewer: I'm sure you will find this position a breeze then. If you wouldn't mind,
could you explain why you weren't paid?
Laura: Yes, of course! The reason is that it was my uncle's restaurant, Dumpling
Delight. I didn't get paid but my uncle always gave me lots of free food.
Interviewer: So it was a family business. Now, would you mind telling me when you can
work?
Laura: I can only work on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings.
Interviewer: …Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. OK. Could I ask why you can
only work on those evenings?
Laura: It's a result of my schedule. I do evening classes, you see.
Interviewer: That's not a problem. Also, could you tell me when you could start?
Laura: I'm afraid I can't start until 22 July. It's due to exams I have to take.
Interviewer: I think that will be fine. Finally, what's your phone number, please?
Laura: It's 5559 3321.
Interviewer: Wonderful. And you're 19 years old, aren't you?
Laura: Actually, I'm 18.
Interviewer: Right. I'll give you a call in a few days and let you know my decision. Thank
you, Laura.
