Assurance of Life After the Fall

Just watching the news on television makes us painfully aware that the modern world is plagued with conflict, crime, evil, greed, hatred, immorality, murder, theft, and violence.

Believe it or not, there was a time when there was no evil on Earth. God formed the first man from the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7).

An Earthly Paradise

God put the man in a beautiful garden in the land of Eden and commissioned him to take care of the garden. Various kinds of trees grew there. Some were pleasing to the eye, and others produced delicious fruit for food. In the middle of the garden, God put two special trees: the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:8-9).

The Lord God said to the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). This command was simple, clear, and easily understood.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18). So God put Adam to sleep, took a rib from his side, and made a woman from the rib. Someone has noted that God did not take a bone from Adam's skull that the woman should rule over him. Nor did he take a bone from Adam's foot that he should trample on her. He took a rib from Adam's side, near his heart, so that he would love her.

When Adam woke up and looked at the woman that God had made for him, he said, “Zoth happaam!” “Zoth happaam” is a Hebrew idiom that cannot be translated straight across into English. In essence, Adam said, “Wow!” Or, to use an English idiom to translate the Hebrew idiom, Adam said, “You've hit the nail on the head!” Adam liked what he saw.

God said: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24). Adam and Eve enjoyed an intimate relationship with God and with each other. They were naked and felt no shame. The Garden of Eden was an earthly paradise.

Satan Ruins Everything

One day, Satan came to the garden and spoke to Eve through a snake. He said, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” (Genesis 3:1). Eve replied, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die’” (Genesis 3:2-3). Satan replied, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:4-5).

The fruit on the forbidden tree was beautiful, and it looked delicious. Believing that it would make her wise like God, Eve took a bite of the fruit and gave some to Adam. They believed Satan's lie and disobeyed God's command. Thus, sin entered the world.

Unbelief, the Root of Sin

God had created Adam and Eve in his own likeness. They possessed qualities of God's character. God is pure and holy, and the first couple was perfectly innocent. God is love, and they loved God and each other with pure hearts. God is infinitely intelligent, and Adam and Eve were thinking, rational beings. When God commanded Adam not to eat fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he was putting Adam to the test.

In one of his published sermons, evangelist Bill Parker says, “The tree represented God's sovereign authority and his standard of good and evil, along with his sovereign right to determine good and evil. It is God, then, who is the standard of good. It is God, not men, who determines what is right and what is wrong.”

Parker points out that it was not simply the act of eating the fruit that brought about the fall. Adam and Eve actually fell before they ate the fruit. In their minds, they had determined to disobey God. Their decision to eat the fruit was the result of believing Satan's lie and rejecting God's authority. God had warned Adam that he would die if he ate the fruit, but Satan said to Eve, “You will not die.” In effect, Satan was saying, “God is a liar, and he is not the only one who can determine what is good and what is evil. Eat this fruit, and you can set your own standards of right and wrong.”

Parker concludes, “Adam fell when he took sides with Satan against God. . . . The moment Adam did this, he became guilty, defiled, and spiritually dead. . . . Sin is essentially unbelief in God. Unbelief is what causes man to declare his independence from God and seek to set his own standard of good and evil.”

This explains why there is growing hostility toward the Bible in the modern secular world. God is holy, and he sets high standards of morality and ethics. Many people don't like that.

Rather than submit to God's authority, people in a secular society often deny that God exists, or they ignore his commands. They claim the right to decide for themselves what is right and wrong, and they reject every command they dislike. Even “progressive” churches have swallowed Satan's lies and have embraced things that God clearly condemns. One of the first things progressives do to justify their views is to reject the authority of the Bible.

The Consequences of Sin

When God confronted Adam and Eve with their sin, Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the snake. But they could not escape the consequences of their disobedience. God cursed the ground and caused it to grow thorns and thistles. God said to Adam, “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you will return” (Genesis 3:19). Adam's sin had separated him from God, the source of life. Consequently, death entered the world.

God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and placed cherubim and a flaming sword at the entrance to prevent them from returning to eat fruit from the tree of life. For the first time, Adam and Eve were alone in a hostile environment. Their sin had driven a wedge between them and their Creator.

A Surprising Turn of Events

In the midst of the sorrow, grief, and pain caused by sin in the Garden, a ray of sunshine pierced the darkness. God cursed Satan and predicted his ultimate defeat. He said to Satan, “I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (Genesis 3:15). This is a poetic prediction that Eve's descendant, Jesus Christ, would defeat Satan while suffering pain on the cross.

At this point, God's eternal plan begins to unfold in human history. Later, God promised Abraham (Genesis 12:3; 22:18), Isaac (Genesis 26:4), and Jacob (Genesis 28:14) that all families on earth would be blessed through their descendant, Jesus (Galatians 3:16). As Jacob was dying, he called his sons to his bedside and blessed them. To his son, Judah, he said, “The scepter will not depart from Judah nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs” (Genesis 49:10). God had determined to send his Son into the world through the family of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah. David, the greatest king in the history of Israel, was a descendant of Judah, and Jesus Christ was a descendant of David. Finally, Jesus was born to fulfill God's purpose and to restore what Adam and Eve lost when they sinned in the Garden of Eden.

We Have Gained More “in Christ” Than We Lost in Adam.

In one of his published articles, Kyle Barton says. “In saving us, God doesn't merely restore us to the primeval condition of Adam. God's intention from the beginning was to impart his divine life into us.”

Dr. Elmer Towns of Liberty University says virtually the same thing: “In the incarnation, God [the Son] became like man, that man might become like God.”

The apostle Peter affirms that God has made it possible for us to “participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires” (2 Peter 1:4).

The apostle Paul reminds us that we “are being transformed into his (Christ's) likeness with increasing glory, which comes from the Lord who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Spirit of God who dwells in us (Romans 8:11) is gradually changing us into the likeness of Christ, who is the glory of God (Hebrews 1:3).

Christ Is the Last Adam and the Second Man

Listen carefully to the mysterious words of Paul: “For since death came through a man, the resurrection from the dead comes also through a man [Jesus]. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ, all [of God's people] will be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:21-22). “The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit” (verse 45). “The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven” (1 Corinthians 15:47-48). Let the deep truths in this paragraph sink in.

Kyle Barton points out that Christ is both the last Adam and the second man (1 Corinthians 15:21-22, 45-49). Barton says, “The last Adam terminates what the first Adam brought in. The second man initiates what the first man lacked.” In other words, Jesus (the second Adam) terminates the sin and death that Adam brought in. Jesus (the second man) initiated a state of righteousness and fellowship with God that the first man (Adam) lacked. Adam was expelled from an earthly paradise. Christ has invited us into a heavenly paradise. In Christ, we are heaven-bound.

Conclusion
总结

Arthur W. Pink, 20th century theologian, wrote: “In the sphere of redemption, Christ has not only reversed the effects of the Fall, but because of it has brought in a better thing. The redeemed have gained more through the last Adam than they lost through the first Adam.”

Think of the ways we have gained more “in Christ” than we lost in Adam. Adam lived in an earthly garden. We are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). Adam had a human nature. We participate in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). Adam received earthly blessings. We receive heavenly blessings (Romans 8:17). Adam was separated from God because of sin. We are reconciled with God because of Christ's righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:17-18). Adam died as a result of sin. In Christ we have crossed over from death to eternal life (John 5:24; 1 John 3:14; 5:11-12). “Eternal life” is knowing God and his Son, Jesus Christ (John 17:3). Eternal life is God's quality of life. In Christ, eternal life begins now and lasts forever.

God's eternal plan is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Jesus died to give us life.
