Assurance from the Holy Spirit

Some people believe that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal force that God sends forth to protect his people from sickness, disease, and the forces of evil. What does the Bible say?

The Old Testament often speaks of the Spirit of God, but it does not explicitly portray the Spirit as a person distinct from Yahweh. There is virtually nothing in the Old Testament to suggest that the Spirit of God is the third person in the trinity. The word “trinity” is not found in scripture, yet glimpses of the triune God are implicitly seen in scripture from Genesis to Revelation. It is not until we come to the New Testament that we find explicit evidence that our one God consists of three persons: Father, Son, and Spirit.

The Triune God in the New Testament

In the New Testament, Father, Son, and Spirit are involved in the conception of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-23; Luke 1:26-35). Father, Son, and Spirit are at the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17; John 1:29- 34). Father, Son, and Spirit are found in the great commission. Jesus says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:18-19). Father, Son, and Spirit are also included in the Lord's farewell address to his apostles on the eve of his crucifixion. He says to them, “I (the Son) will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever–the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16-17). Jesus later refers to the Spirit of truth as “the Holy Spirit” (John 14:26). Then Jesus says, “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes out from the Father, he will testify of me” (John 15:26-27).

The Holy Spirit Is a Person.

Jesus used personal pronouns with reference to the Holy Spirit. He said, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears; and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking what is mine and making it known to you” (John 16:13-14). Seven times in these two verses, Jesus uses the personal pronouns “he,” “his,” and “him.” Personal pronouns refer to a person.

Throughout the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is said to have personal attributes: The Holy Spirit thinks (1 Corinthians 2:10). He loves (Romans 5:5). He grieves (Ephesians 4:30). He can be insulted (Hebrews 10:29). He makes choices (1 Corinthians 12:11). He teaches (1 Corinthians 2:13). He guides (Romans 8:14). He counsels (John 14:16). He commands (Acts 8:29). He speaks (Acts 13:2). In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is revealed as a person.

The Holy Spirit Is Divine.

The divine personhood of the Spirit becomes clear in the case of Ananias and Sapphira who lied about the money they brought to the apostles for distribution to the poor. Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit? . . . What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God” (Acts 5:4). By lying to the Holy Spirit, Ananias had lied to God. The Holy Spirit is a divine being.

The Spirit Reveals the Deep Things of God to Us.

Paul declares that God has revealed his secret wisdom to us by his Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:7-10). Then Paul writes, “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. . . . no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us” (1 Corinthians 2:10-12).

Through the Spirit-inspired word, the Holy Spirit reveals to us the secret wisdom of God and enables us to understand the wonder, beauty, and glory of what God has given us through Jesus Christ.

The Spirit Lives in Us and Empowers Us.

Paul asks the Christians in Corinth, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? (1 Corinthians 6:19).

In his letter to Roman Christians, Paul explains, “You . . . are controlled, not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ” (Romans 8:9).

This is strong language. Paul uses the terms “the Spirit,” “the Spirit of God,” “the Spirit of Christ,” and “the Holy Spirit” synonymously, and he insists that we do not belong to Christ if the Spirit is not living in us. It is because the Spirit is alive in us that we are no longer controlled by our flesh. The Spirit gives us moral and ethical power that we could never have without him.

To the Christians in Ephesus, Paul wrote, “I pray that out of his glorious riches he [God] may empower you through his Spirit in your inner being” (Ephesians 3:16).

Paul knew from personal experience that a civil war rages within us. (See Romans 7:14-25; 1 Corinthians 9:27.) Our flesh pulls us in one direction, and our spirit pulls in another. Our flesh pulls us downward through lust, greed, pride, and other forms of evil. Yet, God has put eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11), and our spiritual nature draws us upward toward our Creator. We need help to conquer the flesh, and God provides that help through the Spirit.

The Spirit does not force us to walk in paths of righteousness, but when we want to follow Jesus, the Spirit assists us.

The Spirit Helps Us Kill the Misdeeds of the Flesh.

Paul warns, “For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13). The Spirit helps us gain self-control.

Jesus says that we must make a choice. We can choose to indulge our fleshly appetites and follow the crowd down the broad road that leads to destruction; or we can follow the Spirit up the narrow road that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14). Doing things our way is suicidal. Doing things God's way by the power of the Spirit is life-saving. The road on which the Spirit leads us will end at the pearly gates through which we will be ushered into heaven.

The Spirit Testifies That We Are Children of God.

Paul asserts that “those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship” (Romans 8:15).

The Greek word that is translated “sonship” refers to “adoption.” In his Daily Study Bible commentary, William Barclay writes, “In this passage, Paul is introducing us to another of the great metaphors in which he describes a new relationship of the Christian to God. Here Paul speaks of Christians being adopted into the family of God.”

Paul uses the Roman adoption system as a backdrop. Barclay writes, “It is the consequences of adoption which are most significant for the picture that is in Paul's mind. There were four main consequences: (1) The adopted person lost all rights in his old family, and gained all the rights of a legitimate son in his new family. . . . (2) It followed that he became heir to his new father's estate. . . . (3) In law, the old life of the adopted person was completely wiped out, . . . all debts were cancelled. . . . The adopted person was regarded as a new person entering into a new life. . . . (4) In the eyes of the law, the adopted son was literally . . . the son of his new father.”

Paul may have had our adoption in mind when he wrote, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old is gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The moment we are adopted into God's family, we leave behind our allegiance to self, Satan, and sin, and we transfer our allegiance to our heavenly Father. Our spiritual debts are cancelled, and we begin a new life with God. As God's children, we are “heirs of God and coheirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17). To what are we heirs? Paul answers, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to us” (Romans 8:18).

It is reassuring to know that “God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out ‘Abba, Father’” (Galatians 4:6). Notice, in this verse, that it is the Spirit who is doing the calling. Yet, “by the Spirit,” we too cry, “Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15). When we pray, “Our Father in heaven” (Matthew 6:9), our human spirit testifies that we are children of God. Then, “the Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children” (Romans 8:16). Since the Spirit was present when God adopted us into his family, his testimony regarding our adoption is indisputable. We really are God's children and heirs to his riches.

When we become a Christian, we enter into the very family of God. As Barclay points out, we have done nothing to earn it; we have done nothing to deserve it, but God, in his amazing love and mercy, “has taken the lost, helpless, poverty-stricken, debt-laden sinner and adopted him into his own family, so that debts are cancelled and the unearned love and glory are inherited.”

The Holy Spirit Is God's Seal on Us.

In the ancient world, a businessman selling goods in the marketplace put a personal “seal” or stamp on all of his merchandise. Every bag of goods, every crate of products, everything that he put up for sale, contained his seal verifying that the merchandise was his.

Paul portrays the Holy Spirit as God's seal on us. The Holy Spirit who lives in us, who bears spiritual fruit in us (Galatians 5:22-23), who transforms us into the likeness of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18), verifies that we belong to God.

The Holy Spirit Is Also God's Pledge to Us.

In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul said that God “anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22).

The Greek word that is translated “deposit” (arrabôn) is a word that means “down payment.” The Holy Spirit is God's down payment on heaven.

In this analogy, Paul is saying that our life in the Spirit is a foretaste of our glorious life after death. The Spirit is God's guarantee that the best is yet to come.

Conclusion
总结

In summary, the Spirit leads us to God and to Christ. The Spirit brings honor and glory to them, not to himself. When God adopts us into his family, he gives us the Spirit to strengthen us, to enlighten us, to lead us, and to transform us into the likeness of Christ. The Spirit is God's seal that proves we belong to him. The Spirit is God's deposit which guarantees our inheritance in heaven. From the moment we are born again of water and the Spirit (John 3:3-5), the Spirit works in us to prepare us for eternity and to assure us that a glorious future awaits us in heaven.

It is reassuring to know that “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, . . . who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:1, 4).
