 1 Celia's Problem — Conversation

Celia: I need many things for my new apartment.
Samantha: I have an idea. We have to go shopping.
Lana and Ying Le: Shopping!
Lana: When?
Ying Le: Where?
Celia: How? I don't have a lot of money.
Samantha: Oh, there are many places we can go.
Lana: There's a furniture store on Main Street.
Samantha: I know that store. It's very expensive.
Celia: Expensive?
Samantha: Expensive means it costs a lot of money. But don't worry, there are other places we can buy furniture.
You can look in the newspaper or go to garage sales. You can find sofas, lamps, refrigerators that are less
expensive. They might be used, but they can still be good.
Lana: Here's the newspaper.
Ying Le: Oh, let's look.
Samantha: You'll be fine, Celia. It takes time to find the things you like, but everything will look great.
Celia: Okay.

 2 Garage Sales — Classroom Lesson

Ms. Marquez: Celia, what kind of chairs do you want for your apartment now?
Celia: I want big chairs in good condition.
Ms. Marquez: Where can she buy chairs? Jagraj.
Jagraj: At the furniture store.
Ms. Marquez: You can buy furniture at a furniture store. Also, sometimes people sell their old furniture at a
garage sale. You can find garage sales at people's homes. Let's visit one and see.
---------------
Maria: Hmmm, garage sale.
Nancy: May I help you?
Maria: Hi. I'm looking for some chairs. How much is this blue one?
Tom: It's $35.
Nancy: Oh, no. This chair is in excellent condition. It's $40.
Maria: Can I buy the blue one and the orange one for $50. The orange one is old, and it's in poor condition. I
think $50 is reasonable for these two chairs.
Nancy: Okay. $50 for both. Congratulations, you have two new chairs.
Maria: Thank you.
---------------
Ms. Marquez: Class, how much are the two chairs? Lana.
Lana: The chairs are $50.
Ms. Marquez: Shin-Jun, is that a reasonable price?
Shin Jun: Yes, it is.
Ms. Marquez: Carmen, how is the blue chair?
Carmen: It's in excellent condition.
Ms. Marquez: And, Lin, how is the orange chair?
Lin: It's in bad condition.
Ms. Marquez: Good work, everyone.

 3 Life Skill: Reading a Garage Sale Ad — Classroom Lesson

Ms. Marquez: So, Celia, are you going to go to a garage sale to look for furniture?
Celia: Yes. I want to go to a garage sale this weekend. But how do I find a garage sale?
Ms. Marquez: You can find garage sales listed in your local newspaper. And sometimes people put signs in the
neighborhood with the address of a garage sale.
Time to go. Use the English we've learned. And good luck with your new apartment, Celia.
Celia: Thank you.

 4 Celia Moves In — Conversation

Danny: Here is the key to your new apartment.
Celia: Thank you, Danny. And thank you for helping me move in.
Danny: You're welcome, Celia. And if you need anything, I'm right upstairs, please ask.
Ying Le: Oh, Celia, what a nice apartment.
Lana: How many rooms does it have?
Celia: There are two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and this living room.
People: Congratulations.
Celia: Thank you. Now let's get to work.
Ying Le: Oh, I like it.
Lana: It's great.
Celia: Come on, don't stand there. Let's go! Is that everything?
Danny: You have two chairs and two lamps.
Lana: You have a coffee table and a sofa.
Ying Le: You have some plants and a television.
Danny: Yes. You have a great apartment.
Celia: It's my first apartment in the United States. I can't believe it. I'm very happy.
Ying Le: I'm so happy for you too.
Lana: You're so lucky.
