 1 Getting Around — Classroom Practice  

Ms. Marquez: Now I want to ask you questions about transportation. Lin, can you ride a motorcycle?
Lin: No, I can't.
Ms. Marquez: Can you ride a bicycle?
Lin: Yes, I can.
Ms. Marquez: Do you ride a bicycle to school?
Lin: Yes, I do.
Ms. Marquez: Can anybody ride a motorcycle?
Elena: I can.
Ms. Marquez: Do you ride a motorcycle to school?
Elena: Yes, I do.
Ms. Marquez: That's great. But be careful.
Elena: I'm very careful.
Ms. Marquez: Good. Does anybody take the metro rail to school?
Ying Le: I do.
Ms. Marquez: Do you take the metro rail to work too?
Ying Le: Yes. I take it to school, to work, and to the market.
Ms. Marquez: Wonderful. How many of you can drive a car? Can anybody drive a limousine?
Roberto: I can. I'm a limousine driver.
Ms. Marquez: Where do you take people in your limousine?
Roberto: To the airport.
Ms. Marquez: Roberto drives a limousine. He takes people to the airport. Now let's practice asking this question:

Ms. Marquez: Pablo, ask Elena.
Pablo: How do you get to school?
Elena: I ride a motorcycle.

Jagraj: It is a bus schedule.
Ms. Marquez: That's right, Jagraj. Bus schedules tell you where buses stop and what time they come and go.
Jagraj: The number 32 does not go anywhere on Sundays.
Ms. Marquez: Ah, and you learned that last weekend, right?
Jagraj: Yes.
Ms. Marquez: Well, let's take a moment to look at a bus schedule.
Here's a sample schedule for bus 7. The route for this bus is Main Street. The bus arrives at Main and First at
8:30.
The bus arrives at Main and White at 8:45.
The bus arrives at Main and Wilson at 9:00.
It's important to learn how to read bus schedules. You can find bus schedules on any bus. You can also find
them on the internet.

Celia: Jagraj, you're here.
Jagraj: I'm here on time.
Ying Le: How's the bus?
Jagraj: The bus? It's easy. Just read the schedule. No problem.
Danny: Am I late?
Celia: Danny! No. Please come in.
Danny: I think you need something for your new apartment.
Celia: Thank you. They're beautiful.
Jagraj: Hey, Danny, I'm on time. And I know how to read the bus schedule. Come and let me tell you about it.

It's Sunday. Jagraj is going to Celia's apartment. He is waiting for Bus 32 at Palm Ave. and First St. The
schedule says that Bus 32 comes at 9:15. Jagraj waits and waits, but the bus doesn't come.
Jagraj waits for 20 minutes and then he walks to Celia's apartment. It takes him 2 hours to get there! He is 3
hours late.

Danny helps him read the bus schedule. The times on the schedule are for Monday to Saturday. Sometimes the
schedule changes on weekends. There is no Bus 32 on Sunday.

Jagraj learns about bus schedules in his English class. The next Sunday, he looks at the bus schedule again. It
says that Bus 28 runs every two hours on Sunday.
Jagraj goes to the bus stop at Elm Ave. and First St. at 12:55. He waits for five minutes. Then he takes Bus 28 to
Celia's apartment. Jagraj gets to Celia's apartment on time.

Ms. Marquez: Roberto, you drive every day. Let me ask you a question. Where do you see this sign?
Roberto: You see this sign on the highway.
Ms. Marquez: Yes. This is a speed limit sign on a highway. Do you speed, Roberto?
Roberto: Speed?
Ms. Marquez: Drive too fast.
Roberto: No.
Ms. Marquez: Good. You shouldn't speed. You should drive the speed limit.
