Wizard: Oh, hello. You're already here. Sorry I'm late. Please come in. Welcome to my home. In today's
episode we will learn about men's changing roles and the verbs make and do. Let me demonstrate. Each

Karina's day has a bad start. She wakes up early and gets in the shower. Suddenly, the water turns cold. She
goes to the manager's apartment to complain about the hot water problem. Then she begins her busy day.
Karina works full time, but she also takes care of all the housework and chores. When Victor gets home, he
finds his wife asleep. He asks her why she is tired and she lists all her responsibilities. Karina gets angry
because Victor doesn't realize how much work she has to do each day.
While you watch the video, listen for the answer to this question:
What chores and responsibilities does Karina take care of each day?

 11 Story Start Up — Let's Watch

Karina: Come on, Max. It's time to get up.
[Scream!] I can't believe it! The water is still cold. That is the third time it's happened.
Mr. Greedo: Nobody else is complaining. You're sure the water wasn't hot?
Karina: Yes, I'm sure the water wasn't hot. I think I know when water is hot and when water is not hot.
Mr. Greedo: All right. All right. I'll take a look at it later.
Karina: When?
Mr. Greedo: I'll get to it when I get to it. I have a lot of other things to do.
Karina: Fine!
Victor: This one? No. This one? No. This one? No.
Karina: Victor, what are you doing? You're making a mess. Max, please go get dressed.
Why do I always have to fold your clothes?
Max: These ones? No. These ones? No.
Karina: Max, what are you doing?
Max: These ones? No. These ones? No. I'm getting dressed.
Karina: Max, pick up your clothes.
Victor: Have a good day.
Karina: What about breakfast? I made you breakfast.
Victor: Oh, I'm having breakfast with Nicoli. I'll see you later.
---------------
Victor: Hello.
Karina: Hi.
Victor: How is my beautiful wife?
Karina: Tired.
Victor: Oh, why?
Karina: Why? I do a lot of work, Victor.
Victor: Oh, what do you do?
Karina: What do I do? What do I do?! Hm. Let's see. What do I do? I get up. I take care of Max. I make
breakfast. I make the beds. I do the dishes. I take Max to mother's. I go to work. I do the shopping. I do the
laundry. I do the cleaning. I get Max from mother's. I make dinner. That's why your beautiful wife is so tired!
Victor: But that's what women do. They make dinner. They clean the house. They take care of children.
Karina: OH!!
Victor: Wait! What's for dinner?

 24 Life Skills — Getting Ready

At work, Victor tells his friend Jason that Karina must do the housework because she is the woman. Jason
doesn't think Victor is being fair. He believes Victor should help Karina with the housework because she also
works outside the home.
At home, Karina tells Victor that they need to work together to share the housework and other responsibilities.
But will Victor change his views?
While you watch the video, listen for the answer to this question:
What does Jason say his wife, Vanessa, would do if he said the things Victor said about women's work?

 25 Life Skills — Let's Watch

Victor: It is very simple. I'm the man. She's the woman. I do the work of the man and she does the work of the
woman.
Jason: Geez, Victor. If I'd that to Vanessa, she'd throw me out.
Victor: Ah, but you agree with me.
Jason: No. Look, there's no such thing as man's work and woman's work anymore. It's all just work. Like
Vanessa and me. We help each other. If she makes breakfast, I make the bed. If I do the shopping, she does the
laundry. If she makes dinner, I do the dishes. She does things for me. I do things for her.
Karina, she works, right?
Victor: Yes.
Jason: Full time?
Victor: Yes.
Jason: So is it fair that she has to do all the housework too?
Victor: It is not my fault that she's a woman. That is her mother's fault.
Jason: Oh. Victor. You're something. You are really something.
---------------
Karina: I expect you to do the dishes and clean up once in a while. We need to work together.
Victor: Men don't do dishes. You did not make me do this before.
Karina: Victor, life is different now. Times have changed. Everything has changed. The question is, will you?

 26 Life Skills — Reading

Sharing Responsibilities
In today's society, the role men play is different from in years past. Before, men worked at jobs to earn money
and women stayed home to take care of the children. Now, many women have jobs and work outside of the
home. These women do not have time to do all of the housework. Usually, their husbands help them at home.
In the United States today, couples share the chores and responsibilities at home. Often men do many of the
chores that women did before. Men do the dishes, they do the laundry, they make dinner, and they clean the
house. Men also spend more time taking care of the children than before. There is no such thing as men's work
and women's work anymore. Now, it's all just work.

 27 Grammar — Let's Watch

Wizard: Boy, oh boy. In today's society, what is a man supposed to do? What is a woman supposed to do?
When I was a young wizard, it was very simple. My father would go out and cast the spells and my mother
would stay home and take care of the lair. But today, it is not so simple. Jason really understands about sharing
responsibilities with his wife. And he also knows how to use the verbs make and do. Let's watch.
If she makes breakfast, I make the bed.
If I do the shopping, she does the laundry.
If she makes dinner, I do the dishes.
She does things for me. I do things for her.
Make and do are both verbs we use to express accomplishment. Generally do is for activities. For example, I do
the shopping. I do the laundry. We use make when we want to create something that wasn't there before. For
example, we make dinner. We make furniture. Easy, right?

 28 Making Choices — Getting Ready - Choice A

Victor believes a "real man" does not do housework. He says that, like his father, he will not do chores at home.
Three months later, Victor arrives home and sees luggage and boxes at the front door. The boxes have his name
on them. When he opens the door, he sees another man having dinner with Karina.
Karina explains this is a "real man" because he shares the chores with her.
While you watch the video, listen for the answer to this question:
How does the "real man" make Karina feel?

 29 Making Choices — Let's Watch Choice A

Victor: I will change nothing. Victor Pushkin's a real man just like his father. And this I am sure. My father does
not cook. My father does not clean. My father does not do dishes. Neither do I.
---------------
Victor: What is this? Victor's stuff? Karina? Who is this man?
Karina: This is a real man who helps make dinner and helps me do the dishes.
Victor: But Karina, why?
Karina: Why? Because he shares the work with me and that makes me feel special and appreciated and loved.
Victor: But – but –
Wizard: Boy, that was quick. Karina got so tired that she found a man that cooks and cleans. Poor Victor.

 30 Making Choices — Getting Ready - Choice B

Victor agrees he should change and help Karina at home. This makes Karina happy.
Karina sees Sue, from HUD at the dance studio and tells her about the problems at the apartment. Sue visits the
manager and tells him to get a plumber to fix the water.
The next day, Karina arrives home to see Max and Victor wearing chef's hats. They have prepared dinner and
invite her to dine at their "restaurant."
Then, the doorbell rings and the apartment manager is at the door. Everyone is surprised when little Max invites
him to dinner. The manager appreciates being a dinner guest with his friendly neighbors.
While you watch the video, look for the answer to this question:
What does Karina say she has in common with the manager?

 31 Making Choices — Let's Watch Choice B

Wizard: Let's see what happens when Victor makes a change. And action!
---------------
Karina: Victor, life is different now. Times have changed. Everything has changed. The question is, will you?
Victor: Karina, back home it wasn't like this. But, maybe you're right. I should help you with your work.
Karina: With dinner?
Victor: Yes.
Karina: And the dishes?
Victor: Ooh. And the dishes.
---------------
Woman: Karina.
Karina: Yes?
Oh, Sue, from HUD, hello!
Sue: I helped Karina with a housing complaint. This is my cousin, Eric.
Eric: Hi.
Sue: We're going to take dance lessons. Are you taking classes too?
Karina: I teach classes.
Sue: Oh, how funny.
Eric: Really. Can we take your class?
Karina: Um-
Sue: So, how is the new apartment?
Karina: Well, to tell you the truth, things aren't going very well.
Sue: Really? What's the problem?
Karina: Well, there's no hot water and the manager is not a very nice guy.
---------------
Mr. Greedo: Yeah.
Sue: Sue Blake from HUD. Remember me?
Mr. Greedo: I don't know. Maybe.
Sue: It seems that the Pushkins are having a problem with their hot water. Do you know anything about that?
Mr. Greedo: Oh yeah. I've been trying to get a plumber to go down and-
Sue: I don't believe you for one minute, Mr. Greedo. You get someone in there to fix it pronto! If you don't,
you'll be in hot water!
Mr. Greedo: But-
Sue: No buts! If they don't have hot water by tomorrow, the next apartment for rent around here will be yours!
Mr. Greedo: Have a nice day!
---------------
Karina: Thank you.
Sue: I'm serious, Karina. Call me if your water is not fixed by tomorrow.
Karina: I don't know how to thank you for all your help.
Sue: I'll tell you what, if you can teach me how to dance, that will be all the thanks I need.
Karina: Then you are in luck. I will make you a great dancer. I promise.
Sue: I can't wait. I'll see you Tuesday. Oh, by the way, I thought you'd like to know, my cousin was very
disappointed to hear you were married. Bye.
Karina: Bye.
---------------
Victor: Super Max. There's a beautiful lady at the door. [whispers] One, two, three. Go.
Max: Welcome to Max and Victor's Restaurant. Would you like to dine with us this evening?
Karina: Well yes I would!
Max: Come right this way.
Karina: Yes, I will.
Victor: Welcome. We have many specials for you tonight.
Karina: Oh, I can see.
Victor: Please, you must start with Max and Victor's Super-Duper Soup.
Max: It is Super Duper.
Victor: Hmm.
Karina: Hmm. It is super-duper.
Victor: Ah, but this is just the beginning.
[Door bell] Who is that? We did not expect other guests.
Yes?
Mr. Greedo: Hi.
Victor: Please, come in.
Mr. Greedo: I just wanted to tell you I fixed your hot water problem.
Karina: Thank you.
Mr. Greedo: And I'm sorry about what happened.
Max: Welcome to Max and Victor's Restaurant. Would you like to dine with us this evening?
Karina: Welcome to Max and Victor's Restaurant. Would you like to dine with us this evening?
Mr. Greedo: What?
Victor: Yes, why not. We are neighbors, ah? Let us be friendly neighbors. Please, sit down.
Max: Please sit down.
Mr. Greedo: I've never been invited to dinner before.
Karina: Then we have something in common. This is my first time too. But I think I could learn to like it.

 32 Review and Assessment — Let's Watch

Wizard: Aww. What a happy ending. Everything is finally working out for the Pushkins. Even Lyle made new
friends.
Well, this is our last episode on managing family life. And remember to practice the verbs we learned. See you
next time on English for All!
Oh, wish me luck. I also have my own dinner date – with Rosalinda! She finally said Yes!
