 26 Life Skills — Reading

Improving your English Skills
There are many ways to improve your English. Many communities have free English classes for adults. Ask
your friends and coworkers if they know about a school in your neighborhood. If there are no classes near you,
there are still many ways to practice English.
To improve your listening and speaking skills, you can listen to the radio in English or watch TV programs in
English. Sometimes there are programs for people who are learning English. Talk with your coworkers in
English. Ask people questions. Speak with neighbors in English when you see them. Tell your family that you
want to practice English at home and choose one day a week when everyone speaks English. Use English any
time you can.
If you want to improve your reading and writing skills, you can buy textbooks to help you study. Read
magazines and newspapers in English. Visit a library and ask the librarian to help you find books at your
reading level. Write notes in English to your family members, to your children's teachers, or to your coworkers.
You can also practice English using computer programs or the Internet.
English is all around you. Take advantage of the many opportunities that you have every day to practice English
and improve your skills.
