1 High Seas — Basic Story
A family is sailing around the Pacific Ocean. They are on a big yacht. The trip will take them away from home
for a year.
They stay in touch with family and friends by e-mail. The children send e-mail to their grandmother three or
four times a week. The father is in touch with his office every day. He also gets weather information by e-mail.
E-mail on the sea takes more time than on land. The family's computer connects by a modem to a short-wave
radio. The radio sends the message to the Internet. The grandmother gets the message from the Internet.
The grandmother learned to use the Internet just before she retired. She learned because of her children and
grandchildren. She says e-mail makes her feel like she has been traveling with them.
Close to 8 million senior citizens use the Internet. That is two times as many as a year ago. They use it mainly to
keep in touch with their families.
