Lesson Eleven

Assurance From the Resurrection

The resurrection of Christ is at the heart of the good news about Christ. If Jesus had not been raised, Christianity would not exist, and we would have no hope (1 Corinthians 15:13-19). But Jesus did come out of the tomb, and that makes all the difference in the world.

Jesus Predicted His Death and Resurrection

A group of scribes and Pharisees came to Jesus one day and said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you” (Matthew 12:38). Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:39-40).

By this time, Jesus had already performed at least ten miracles (Matthew 8 through 12). He had just healed a demon-possessed man, and the Pharisees had accused him of driving out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons (Matthew 12:9-24). Jesus perceived their hypocrisy and refused to accommodate them. The only sign they would get from him was the sign of the prophet Jonah. After Jonah had been in the belly of a fish three days and nights, the fish spit him out on the beach and gave him new life (Jonah 2:10). Likewise, Jesus would be in the belly of the earth three days and nights before being raised from death. This was the first time Jesus predicted his death and resurrection. But it was not the last.

Three More Predictions

At Caesarea Philippi, Jesus began explaining to his apostles that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hand of the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed, and on the third day be raised to life." (Matthew 16:21). Peter rebuked Jesus saying, “Never, Lord! This will never happen to you!” (Matthew 16:22). Jesus replied, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men” (Matthew 16:23). Human thinking is often contrary to God's thinking. The death and resurrection of Jesus had been God's plan from eternity.

Later, as Jesus and his apostles were passing through Galilee, Jesus said to them again, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days, he will rise” (Mark 9:31). The apostles could not understand what Jesus was saying, but they were afraid to ask for more information.

Finally, as Jesus and his followers were walking up the road toward Jerusalem, he gave them a third warning: “We are going to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him, and kill him. Three days later, he will rise” (Mark 10:33-34).

Four times, Jesus predicted his death and his resurrection. That was God's plan, and Jesus had come to fulfill it.

Resurrection Preaching on the Day of Pentecost

On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood up with the other apostles and spoke to thousands of Jewish people. He said, “Men of Israel, listen to this. Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miraculous wonders and signs which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. . . . Therefore, let all of Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:22-32, 36).

The resurrection of Jesus was at the heart of Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost. In response to that sermon, about 3,000 people were baptized into Christ that day (Acts 2:41). And the Lord added to that number daily (Acts 2:47).

Resurrection Preaching at the Gate Called “Beautiful”

Later, at the temple gate called Beautiful, Peter and John healed a lame man who had been crippled from birth. When people at the temple saw the man walking and leaping and praising God, “they were filled with wonder and amazement” (Acts 3:10), and they came running to see him. Peter said to them, “Men of Israel, . . . the God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate though he had decided to let him go. . . . You killed the author of life, but God raised him up from the dead. We are witnesses of this” (Acts 3:12- 15).

Many of the people who heard that resurrection message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand (Acts 4:4).

Resurrection Preaching in Every Sermon in Acts

Every sermon in the book of Acts focuses on the resurrection of Christ. The resurrection was at the heart of Peter's sermon to the Roman centurion and his household (Acts 10:39-41). It was at the heart of Paul's sermon in Antioch of Pisidia (Acts 13:27-32). It was at the center of Paul's sermon in Thessalonica (Acts 17:1-3). In Athens, Paul concluded his sermon at the Areopagus (Mars Hill) by saying that God “has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead” (Acts 17:31). The resurrection of Jesus is God's proof that Jesus is the Christ who will ultimately judge the world. Jesus is the “one man” God has chosen to sit on the judgment seat at the end of time (Matthew 25:31; Acts 10:39-43).

The resurrection of Christ was the focal point of the teaching and preaching of the apostles. The resurrection is mentioned in the New Testament more than 100 times.

The Resurrection Proves That Jesus Is the Son of God.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul asserts that God promised through his prophets to send his Son “who, as to his human nature, was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:1-4).

Paul's sentence is a little complicated, so let's unpack it. Jesus was a descendant of David according to the flesh. David, a prophet of God, predicted the resurrection of Jesus (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:25-27). Jesus was raised from death by the power of the Spirit, and his resurrection proved that Jesus was, and is, the Son of God.

The Resurrection Assures Us of Our Own Resurrection

Paul wrote, “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20). The term “firstfruits” is used in Leviticus 23:10 with reference to the first sheaf of grain offered to the Lord at the beginning of the barley harvest. This wave offering was presented to God on the day following the Sabbath (the first day of the week) during the Passover festival, the very day Jesus was raised from death as the firstfruits of many resurrections.

Jesus was not only the Paschal lamb. He was also the firstfruits of a spiritual harvest. As “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep,” he was the first of many people who would be resurrected never to die again. That is good news. We, too, will be raised from death. The Greek word that is translated “resurrection” in the New Testament is anástasis which means “to awaken, to restore, to rise up, to stand.” This word suggests rising from death never to die again.

Different Greek words are used to describe the dead who wake up temporarily. For example, after Jesus arose from death, “the tombs broke open, and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life” (Matthew 27:52-53). The Greek word that is translated “were raised” is egá´rô. The same word is used in John 12:9 about Lazarus whom Jesus “had raised from the dead.” Lazarus, and the holy people who were raised to life in Jerusalem, died again. Jesus is the firstfruits of those who will be resurrected to live forever. The resurrection of Jesus demonstrates that there is life after death. It assures us that we, too, will experience a resurrection like his.

Jesus said, “Do not be amazed at this, for the time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out–those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned” (John 5:28-29). Those who have been cleansed by the blood of Christ will rise to live. From God's point of view, our resurrection day will be “Homecoming Day.”

The Power of His Resurrection

As a young man, Saul of Tarsus was a rising star. He received special privileges and benefits as a dynamic young Jewish leader. But when he met Jesus, he gave up those fringe benefits. He said, “I consider them rubbish that I may gain Christ. . . . I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection” (Philippians 3:8, 10). The resurrection of Christ became the great dynamic in Saul's (Paul's) life. The resurrection of Christ is our guarantee of immortality. It gives us powerful incentive to follow Jesus, to live the Christian life, and to share our faith with others. The resurrection of Christ empowers us to live with a view to eternity.

The Resurrection Assures us That We Have an Advocate

Paul wrote, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We all slip and fall, and Satan is quick to accuse us. (See Job, chapters one and two; Zechariah 3:1-5). It is good to know that when we slip and fall into sin and repent, “we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One” (1 John 2:1).

The resurrected, glorified Jesus is still alive. He is at God's right hand pleading our case, asking the Father to forgive us. The writer of Hebrews assures us that Jesus “is able to save completely those who come to God through him because he always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:24-25). Christ is our heavenly advocate.

The Resurrection Assures Us That Jesus Is Always With Us

When Jesus gave the great commission to his apostles on a mountain in Galilee, he commanded them to go and make disciples of all nations. The enormity of that command must have taken their breath away. To boost their courage, Jesus assured them that they would never be alone. He said, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

The apostles have passed the baton to us, and we must run with it. The enormity of our task is challenging. We face resistance and hostility as we share the good news about Christ with a sin-sick world. But Jesus is saying to us, as he said to his apostles, “I am with you always.” He is with us as we serve as Christ's ambassadors. He is with us when we are sick, when we are sad, when we are lonely, when we are hungry, thirsty, and homeless. He is with us when we are peacemakers (Matthew 18:15-20). He is always with us.

The presence of the resurrected Jesus is a tremendous source of assurance.
